About · Juan Frota

Time and geometry, held in restraint.

I am a fine art photographer. Born in São Luís, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, I lived in the United States and Australia and now work from Palmas, Tocantins, where I print my own editions. I photograph landscape, architecture and street in long-term series, gathered under the title A Geometria do Silêncio, the geometry of silence. This page brings together the statement, the path and the recognition.

I

Statement

I use the image as a space for pause, where time and geometry work with restraint. Recording a place interests me less than understanding what remains in it once excess withdraws. Photography, for me, is the construction of meaning.

The work is marked by a restrained aesthetic and by the deliberate use of negative space: absence often weighs as much as presence. This thinking organises the research and unfolds into series photographed in Brazil, Portugal, Spain, the United States and Chile. A fine art photograph suggests, invites, leaves room.

Studio and editions

Every print is made by me, in the studio, on Canson Infinity 100% cotton paper with Canon LUCIA PRO mineral pigment, on a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2100. Nothing is outsourced: I print, check, sign, number and pack.

The works exist in editions of 25 counted across all sizes, in three formats (30, 40 and 60 cm on the long side), with a signed certificate of authenticity. Paper, inks, timelines, shipping and returns are described on the Collect page; terms for designers, architects and hospitality, on the Trade page.

V

Path

My name is Juan Carlo Jacques de Araujo; I sign the work as Juan Frota. I left São Luís as a boy and returned as an adult, after years in the United States and Australia. I studied hotel management; more than ten years of professional work span advertising, hospitality and authorial photography, in long-term projects on landscape and architecture. Moving between territories shaped the visual repertoire and the sense of scale.

Publications: A Geometria do Silêncio, a book and visual manifesto on time and perception; Contraluz, volume 1 of the Série Técnica, a digital guide to backlight photography. Work featured by 121clicks. The full list of awards, with the works and official records, is on the Awards page.
